SUMMARY

Employers are required by law to conduct suitable risk assessments which are an important step in protecting employees from harm and ensuring compliance with the law by reducing risks to as far as is reasonably practicable. This course is designed to help improve the workplace culture for occupational health and safety by providing the skills and knowledge to allow trainees to achieve competency in the assessment of risk and associated processes.

Upon completion of the course, trainees will be expected to:
• Understand the importance of risk assessments.
• Understand the principles of controlling the risks.
• Understand how risk assessment is undertaken.

• Reasons for conducting risk assessments
• Main legislation relating to risk assessment
• Techniques for collecting evidence and their limitations
• Identifying health and safety hazards
• Identifying who might be harmed and how
• Calculating an appropriate risk rating
• Factors aecting the likelihood of harm
• Factors aecting the severity of harm
• Identifying and evaluating existing control measures
• Proposing additional control measures
• Applying the hierarchy of controls
• Revising a risk rating
• Recording the ndings of a risk assessment
• Making recommendations based on the ndings
• Reviewing and revising a risk assessment

ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATION

The course is assessed via an online assignment after course completion where trainees need to complete a set of tasks in their own workplace. Trainees who score higher than 12 and above out of 18 will be awarded a certificate of completion from British Safety Council.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The course is designed for anyone with a responsibility to conduct risk assessment tasks. It is particularly useful for managers and supervisors but it will be equally beneficial to individual workers, team leaders, technicians, engineers or any other personnel contributing to the risk assessment process.

PREREQUISITES

Trainees should preferably have:
• Good understanding of health and safety principles.
• Good command of the English language.
