LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the three units of the course, trainees will be expected to:
Unit 1 – Principles of Health and Safety Management
• Understand the need for managing health and safety at work
• Understand how international agencies and standards influence health and safety at work
• Understand how to develop and implement a health and safety management system
• Understand how to identify and evaluate hazards and risks associated with workplace activities
• Understand how to develop and implement control strategies for managing health and safety risks at work
• Know how to report and investigate health and safety incidents at work
• Understand how to reduce the impact of workplace activities on the environment
Unit 2 – Safeguarding People’s Health in the Workplace
• Understand how an occupational health strategy integrates with an effective health and safety management system
• Understand how occupational health hazards affect people
• Understand how the health of vulnerable persons can be managed in the workplace
• Understand how to identify and evaluate occupational health hazards and risks
• Understand how to develop and implement control strategies for managing occupational health risks
Unit 3 – Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture in the Workplace
1. Understand the importance of promoting a positive health and safety culture within an organisation
2. Be able to assess the existing health and safety culture of an organisation
3. Understand the factors that influence staff behaviour
4. Know how to develop a strategy for improving the health and safety culture of an organisation
5. Be able to develop and present a business case for improving the health and safety culture of an organisation

ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATION

To qualify for the IDipOSH qualification, trainees need to
attend the course then be assessed as follows:
Unit 1: A three-hour examination comprising extended and short-answer questions and a simulated risk assessment task based on a case study scenario.
Unit 2: A two-hour examination and a 5000 word assignment based on an occupational health hazard in the candidate’s workplace
Unit 3: A 10,000 word assignment involving assessment of the health and safety culture in the candidate’s workplace, a strategy to improve the health and safety culture and a business case to support the strategy.
Unit 1 and 2 examinations can be undertaken all year round. Unit 2 and 3 assignments are submitted electronically to BSC. Examinations and assignments are marked by external examiners appointed and trained by BSC.
A certificate is awarded on successful completion of each Unit. Trainees successfully completing all three Units receive a final grade and a further certificate. The certificate is equivalent to the Bachelor’s degree

TARGET AUDIENCE

Health and safety professionals who are wanting to advance their professional career or undertake further postgraduate study, including managers, professionals and practitioners with specific responsibilities for health and safety in the workplace.

DURATION

150 hours delivered over a non-consecutive six-week period.

PREREQUISITES

Trainees should have:
• Level 3 certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or an alternative appropriate qualification in a related sector. In some cases, appropriate experience gained through a health and safety role may be accepted as an alternative.
• Good command of the English language and numeracy skills adequate to cope with their course of study and assessments (at least level 6 of the IELTS test or equivalent in a comparable test).

SUGGESTED PROGRESSION

Holders of the BSC IDipOSH qualification can further their studies by undertaking an MSc. Several UK Universities will accept holders of the IDipOSH onto the final year of their Masters Programmes.
